I means you need to buy the upgrade chip.

so I can’t even program it for DCC. But is says DCC and sound on the box!!!
do i really need the chip upgrade to operate it on DCC with sound??
It sounds exactly like a dead chip to me. The only way to fix is to replace with the upgrade chip.

Before assuming that the microchip is bad, try resetting the decoder to its factory default values. There should have been some documentation with the locomotive that tells you what CV or CVs to set to restore factory default values.
Then try reprogramming the chip with a new address.
I don’t think it’s defective, but the function that goes through the procedure of shutting down the engine seems to be kicking in for some reason. I think F6 is the startup and shutdown function control on a QSI decoder, so if you have been pushing F6 for any reason, don’t touch it after resetting the decoder and see what happens.
F9 is shut down, double F6 is startup.

it doesn’t even respond on a DC track, makes one sound then kicks off, and no movement!!
Makes the same sound on DCC track too.
Any help??
Either:
1)Send it back to where you bought it.
2)Order the upgrade chip to fix the issues.
3)There is no 3…look above.
If you want another answer, you are out of luck.

if the decoder is saying that it is in shutdown mode you can try double clicking #6 and it should restart the sound. if this does not work try using the magnetic wand to reset the decoder to factory specs. i’ve had to do this several times with my 2 rs27’s and my atlas mp15. if there is something else wrong with the decoder and resetting it doesn’t work i wouldn’t put in the upgrade chip and take the chance of damaging it too.
magnetic wand?? never heard of something like that?
i found the wand, i followed the instructions
just exactly how did u reset the locomotive??
I’ve ran into situations where the magnetic wand is not strong enough to reset the reed switch inside the locomotives, so I have used a more powerful magnet. I just wave the magnet over the top of the model in the vicinity of the reed switch.
Resetting the decoder using DCC will require that you have a programming track, and you may even need a programming booster.
Trying to reset the decoder on the main line will not work if the decoder keeps resetting or shutting down. Using a programming track will overcome this problem.
If this doesn’t solve the problem, then you have a defective unit and it needs to be returned
