Proto 2000 S1s speed inconsistent

I recently bought 2 identical PROTO 2000 S1, one runs in the speed range you’d expect, the other is way slow. they both start off at the same voltage. I want to m.u. them
Is there anything i can check or do, (that wouldnt void the warranty) rather than send it back for repairs? It does operate smoothly, and speeds up somewhat after a few minutes of operation. Thanks, Dan in Bend

Do you run DCC? It almost sounds like a decoder is in there. If do not runn DCC, I would pop off the shell and hook to gator wires straight from the track to the motor leads inside. You should then be able to tell if it is a problem with the motor or the wiring. You could also use a multimeter to test for ohm resistance in the wiring.

I’ll check it out, Thank You. Dan. (no DCC)

Well first that is a age old promblem that affects every brand made…Not to much you or I can do about it except perhaps use DCC…I could never understand why 2 locomotives bought the same day one will be faster and the other slower…There is no flaws in the drive so sending the unit back would be fruitless.Nothing Life Like can do to fix the problem…You may want to clean out that ton of grease LL uses that might help the slower unit.

Brakie, wuz wonderin’ that grease thing myself, sinse it does improve with some “warming up”. I wont bother to send it in either way, especially sinse they both run sweet, just ones slower. Thanks, Dan

Larry, as you know I’m not DCC.
However your reply bring up an interesting question. Does DCC allow you get a higher speed out of the slower unit or do you have to throttle down the faster unit and program it to the slower unit?

The new Broadway E7 review indicated that you will achieve a higher speed with DCC versus a slower speed with DC.???

Chuck,Either way…You can program a locomotive to run faster or slower or at the same speed…You can also program locos regardless of brand name to run at the same speed…Its a nice feature but one I don’t use as I have no need to mu locomotives on my current layout or my old C&O branch line layout…As far as MU’ing and running DC at the club(98% of my locos is still and will remain DC for club use) I just match the closest running locomotives after I tweak the drives…
