Proto 2k, GP30, lubricant?

I picked up a new and unused Proto 2000 GP30 chassis from eBay. When I took it apart I found that the gears, universal joints, and even the truck pivot points were coated with a grease that is like maple syrup- very thick and almost sticky. Is this the normal lubrication that Lifelike uses or recommends? What is it? Seems very unusual but probably great for reducing noise. [?]

I would bet someone lubed it all up with a heavy gear oil. This type of oil is really heavy and sticky. Allot of people will not use it because it is so heavy and dogs the engine down till it gets warmed up. I would take it apart and clean it. and relube it with a lite oil on the motor shafts, gear shafts and worm shafts. Use the Labelle 108 for that then use a lite grease safe for plastics on the gear mesh.

Thanks ICRR, I think your right. Wondered if anybody else had experience with Proto.

It is thoroughly scrubbed now.
