Proto 2K U28B and U30B

Trainworld has the above engines with sound for $89.99 and $119.99, respectively. Anyone have either of these locos and can give me some feedback in regard to performance, quality of QSI-equipped sound, etc? And do you know if they work with the Quantum Engineer? I heard some of the “earlier” QSIs did not work with the Engineer and I thought maybe that’s why these are cheap.

I purchased several just because they were on sale. The perform as one would expect of a P2K. What exactly do you want to know about it? The QSI sound is normal for QSI sound. WAY TOO LOUD out of the box, but easily programmed down. They have the same horn as the GP7s which was unnerving. I am not familiar enough with a U28B prime mover sound to know if it is correct or not.

No I do not, but the P2K U-boats are recent models. I don’t think there were “earlier” ones. I think they are “cheap” for several reasons. First is that in general sound units are just getting cheaper. Second is because the manufacturer overestimated the demand for these units especially painted in L&N colors. Third train world purchases closouts from the manufacturer in volume and passes the savings on to customers.

Looking at prototype pictures of these locos, I have found many that have CB&Q & NYC units together on the same train.

I bought the U28B last month and it works just fine and I recommend it. I don’t know anything about the Quantum Engineer however.
