proto axle clips

is there a trick or technique to removing the black clips that hold the drive axles in? this is an older Proto2000 Geep with the old cracked gear problem. thanks, mike.

Mike.

I use a dull number 11 blade and slip it under the cover and wiggle it back and forth while twisting. Once one side pops loose the other will follow.

Just slide a small flat point screwdriver underneath and gently pry up and sideways. The cover will pop off. You may want to hold your thumb just above it or it could end up part way across the room.

I use a hooked o ring pick. It slips around the wheel and lifts up the locking tab on either side of the piece you are talking about. I don’t like to slide a blade in and wiggle because I am afraid of messing up the gear or breaking the cover.

I’ve been using the screw driver method for 30 years without breaking anything. Those parts (both Athearn & Proto), are made of Delrin, a very tough engineering plastic. By the way, this is the method Athearn recommends, the Protos are identical, (clones). You can even use the Athearn gears to replace the Protos, either will work.

That’s what I’ve always used as well.
