Proto Precisely Meshed Worm Gear & Spur Teeth for Silent Running

Hi all,

OK, Here is the precise wording from the manufacturer about the new drive mechanism for HO scale.

“Precisely meshed worm gear & spur teeth for silent running”.

Does anyone have this yet, and is it better than the older(but new) Proto’s?

I found this one on eBay. It is an E8A.

Thanks in advance

No need to double post. If you dont get a reply, just give it a ‘bump’ by replying to your own thread.

As per Proto having a ‘new’ drive, it is ‘new’ as of 5 years ago (when the Second run of E8s came out). The ‘old’ drive is from the mid 90’s.

Thanks, but this time I thought I needed to reword the heading.

But I do have the question, I have a PA1 from Proto that’s only maybe two years old.

I bought it brand new at a LHS. I just checked and it does not say Precisely Meshed Worm Gear & Spur Teeth for Silent Running.

Is Walthers just now putting that information on there boxes when it was there all along?

Thanks

Can you provide a link to said quote?

David B

Yep.

The older P2Ks, and all other locomotives, feature “Imprecisely Meshed Worm Gears & Spur Teeth for Coffee Grinder Gnashing In Operation.”

Six all your old locos and get the new ones, they’re WAY BETTER.

Trust me.

LOL. I think that whatever Walthers is saying is marketing hype. I have a Proto E-8A and it really is about the quietest locomotive I’ve ever had. Whatever “precise meshing” exists has been there all along.

Sorry about the cut and paste, in Firefox it is difficult to remember how to make the link active.

The wording is down at the bottom, not on box per say, but a friend of mine says it is actually on the box, the newer run box.

Thanks

Now you’ve done it, gone and inspired a new thread.

Look for it soon, titled “Quietest and Smoothest Locomotives”.

Jeffers_mz,

Oh no!

Not another thread on that topic please. Although I think I have stirred up that before.

I was and am thinking that it is marketing, but I already know a few who are thinking it is newer stuff. I quess the marketing is working.

Yes my PA1 runs really well and quiet, but it is not quite silent. I know I know, it is all relative.

If anyone has any other info on this, please let us know.

Thanks for the info. and have fun.

I’d say this is nothing but marketing hype – P2K locomotives that I own have always had precisely meshed gears and run very quietly, until they develop the dreaded cracked gear syndrome and become things that go bump in the night (and daytime, too). [:-^]
