Protosound 2.0 Help!!

My protosound 2.0 engine is very jerky in its operation, it jerks and the headlights flash at the same time. It is a steam loco, run under command mode, new fully charged battery installed.

Thanks

I don’t know anything about MTH but have heard bits here and there and my first question is how old is your battery and does it have a full charge and can it keep it under a load. ie old battery mayneed replacing and if not full charge engine may act weird

Whenever I had this occur it usually was dirty rollers or wheels. I use dremel with pads I get at York…

By chance are you using atlas track. If so clean center rail with 3M scotch brite pad then wipe with alcohol to remove excess blackening.

Sounds like the Smoke Unit. It will do that.

  1. Maybe not enought power in the Power Supply your using to feed the TIU (Sound, Smoke, Lights, on-board Computer).

  2. Bad Fan Motor on Smoke unit, — in command mode, turn off the Smoke. (I’ve had that problem)

  3. In conventional there is a hidden Trim Pot for “Off to Full Smoke” (and another for Sound Volume)

I would be EXTREMELY suspcious of track issues. Because in your statement the headlights flash AND the engine jerks. The headlight flashing is what I am keying off of. As the engine is crossing various segments of track it may be getting an erratic ground OR signal. Resulting from loose track pins, loose wires connecting to power point on track, or even from the TIU.

  • Does this ONLY occur with the ONE engine?

Another thing to try is a “test track” section if you can rig one up. (The roller bearings that are available are fantastic for this type of testing). Or, try testing the engine off the track with a couple of jumper wires connected directly to a ground point on the engine and one to the pickup roller.

Those are the easiest fixes to pursue.

More dramatic would be a loose wire from the pickup roller to the PS2 boards, but I doubt that that will be the problem. (Definetly could be wrong though)
