Whatever happened to the days when guys ran trains for genuine fun? I know that not everyone in the hobby is a rivet-counter, but I know a few. I truly don’t see why anyone would be afraid to run a Big Boy with a string of container cars. I mix equipment from different eras and don’t lose sleep. Maybe I am to critical but that is the way the hobby seems to be going to me.

I agree, the whole point of having a hobby is to have fun. There are many ways to enjoy this hobby from recreating a prototype railroad and operating it with dispatchers, car forwarding, etc. to putting some trains on the track and just running them. And of course you can do both as you feel like it. But if you’re not having fun go do something else.

Oh, but I do run trains for genuine fun…
- I have fun building models as accurately as I can, while making each capable of functioning.
- I have fun assembling those models into trains that resemble what I see in the real world.
- I have fun trying to operate those trains in a way that reflects how real trains operate.
Down the road I plan to have fun building a layout that is recognizable as a slice of the real world in miniature. None of this is neccesary to enjoy the hobby, but it’s my bag. If someone else is having fun without doing any of those things, that’s cool too. So - why are you passing judgement on how I have my fun[?]
Thanks guys for agreeing with me. Also it is nice to have ultra realistic models, but I personally don’t like being “trapped” in a specific era. Nothing against you though that is just my point of view.
I got in a fight with a rivet-counter today at the local hobby store. He went off half-cocked. He thought that I had insulted him, when I made an honest comment.
I agree with you there. Everybody has their term of FUN. Your’s might be different from what another’s is. But I am like you, I like my things to be realistic, because that is the way I have fun. I just started custom painting some of my G scale stuff, and I am having a blast already.
I like reallistic, but I don’t like rivet for rivet model. It’s just the toyish looking offerings that I hate.
Hate is such a waste of valuable energy! As always Enjoy all the things you do in this hobby. As I now model with my seven year old daughter. We “play” with “our” toy trains.
