Prototype Challenger photo walkaround

Hi

Is there a photo walkaround of a Challenger 4-6-6-4 around? I have a bunch of bits but they dont cover all of one.

Thanks

You don’t say which railroad’s 4-6-6-4’s you’re interested in; but, since “Challenger” is associated with Union Pacific, I’ll assume that’s the group you’re interested in.

Alco built the UP Challengers. This organization can supply you with photographs made by Alco of their products:

Frequently, there was a more-or-less walkaround format. For example, I was interested in photos of an SP&S 4-6-6-4. They have 31 shots of SP&S 911. I found what I needed. My catalog shows eight numbers of the UP Challengers. The downside of this is that the price will be on the order of $25 each print (8x10). $25 x 31 = $775.

I also recommend getting a copy of Kratville’s “The Challenger Locomotive”. Many of the photos in the book are from this catalog, so you won’t have to pay for those individual prints. It’s also just a good book on the subject.

Welcome to the forum nz andy.

The UP 3985 is pretty well documented in photos and video. Here are some places. There may or may not be a walk around, but given the hundreds of one single road number, you’ll get what you want for a single unit.

This site has over 500 photos, they also have a related video site.

MR’s “Encyclopedia - Volume 1 Steam Locomotives”, edited by Linn Westcott, may also be useful.

It has a number of photos and HO scale drawings of the 4-6-6-4 classes as built for a number of railroads, including the UP’s Challengers, on pages 244 through 250
