Charles Weever Cushman, amateur photographer and Indiana University alumnus, bequeathed approximately 14,500 Kodachrome color slides to his alma mater. The photographs in this collection bridge a thirty-two year span from 1938 to 1969, during which time he extensively documented the United States as well as other countries.
I saw a reference to this site some months ago, and have used it a time or two. I put a “permanent” note in a file I call RRNetSites.doc.
Just last night I used this site looking for ship pictures to print and put on my background. I found one I manipulated a bit to make the shadows etc match my scene. This picture:
I made a test print which was fine but I want to add a visible name to the ship. I believe I will name it the S S Cushman to give credit to the photographer! (I wonder if there is/was an SS Cushman?)
I also used Cushman’s photos when researching the appearance of 1950s beach goers when painting a figure set I got from China.
Incidently I also found some neat color prototype photos of Hulett unloaders like the ones Walthers just released. The photos are from the Farm Security Administration/ Office of War Information and are available at Library of Congress online. Go to www.loc,gov and click on “American Memory”
