Please, if someone would answer my questions regarding the Milwaukee Road’s, ‘Black & Orange’ color scheme:
1-Was it known as the ‘Simplified’ color scheme?
2-What time period were the ‘Black and Orange’ colors used?
3- Were any flat cars painted in the ‘Black & Orange’ color scheme?

Most of your questions were answered in another forum, but as far as flatcars, none were painted orange and black. Some railroads developed a “company color” like BN’s Cascade Green and painted most everyhting that color, but the Milwaukee didn’t. Milwaukee had some orange reefers, and some boxcars were painted maroon. I think some express boxcars / reefers were painted orange and maroon to match the passenger cars. Otherwise their freight cars were normally boxcar red…could be some gondolas or flats were painted black, that was pretty common in the past.

I was given a Lionel Standard ‘O’ Milwaukee Road flat with a pipe load, which has a burnt orange body with black letters and numbers.
It’s made of die-cast metal and super detailed, but I wanted to know if the color scheme and markings were prototypical and that’s why I asked on this forum, as you members deal with actual/prototypical railroad equipment.

Well it’s probably not correct, but I suppose it’s dangerous to say a railroad never did this or that. It might be that the Milwaukee had some maintenance of way cars that were orange for example…although gray would be more likely.

It looks pretty realistic overall. It’s not impossible the Milwaukee had orange flatcars…but I don’t recall seeing any.

The problem I have with the manufacturers is that everything, with them, is a ‘TOP SECRET,’ due to copyright infringements, they will not say where they get their info. from, other than from books.

The MILW cars were never painted the exact same way from original paint to repaint.

Thank you for your reply.
Your information confirms my suspicions regarding the Milwaukee Road and Lionel’s version, to be possible.
Lately, I am learning from you forum members, other forums and just plain surfing the inter.net, that for the most part, most RR’s. pretty much painted their equipment whatever they wanted, without a set scheme, just as long as their ‘Reporting Marks’ identified their equipment.

Actually most railroads painted their 40’ and 50’ flatcars in boxcar red paint. This was true for
the Milwaukee Road as well so if you see something different its not prototypical!
