Proving about the yard will work now with photos

Well today I Cut the 18" tunouts down like stated in Kalmbach’s Freight Yard book. I decided to do a mock up n the layout. Well I decided ok lets test this an see how long I can go well It isnt 2 feet deep its actually a couple of inches short of it, and I can run it for 8 to 9 feet long depending on the section that isnt built onto the yard yet.

I did however build the mock up on the mainlayout which is all there and what I have so far is 8’ long by 1’8" or so. I am thinking I can run one more turnout to make it a total of 4 sorting tracks and one run around track but I have to see before I go any further.

I’m planning on taking pictures of what I got now.

Those we said it cant be done have little faith in the ones that do have faith.

Ah, the pencil method.

Good for you.

The pencil method? I drew it up but I am actually using track and turnouts. I shortened the atlas code 83 Turnouts and wow does it make a difference I will be back with pictures. Of course the track isnt connected with rail joiners just y et have to file the burs off to get a nice fit and I dont have all the rh turnouts. I dont use the additional curved pieces in the 18" turnouts gives it too much of curve but it all works out.

Here is my test of a yard.

1- Bring in a average train to the arrival track.

2- Get the road engine off and away to the roundhouse (you might not have one but bear with me here)

3- Bring in the switcher and break down that train, sorting cars into the storage yard… perhaps coal cars go into one for the next train to the mines??

4- You should be able to clear that arrival track to make up the next train.

5- A second long track will enable you to build a train while one is being broken down.

6- Everything should not interrupt the mainline.

4 feet or 30 feet, it can be done! It’s all in the trackage.

Your first track looks very close to the edge of the table. Do you have carpet on the floor ?

Maybe some bushes along the edge will keep your loco from going on the floor.

The only fatal flaw in my yard… No run around track. [banghead]

Yes you can do a run around here’s how.

That ladder to the top has a switch at the end by the wall. Put a switch there and run a TRACK DOWN past the ladder switches back to the edge of the table track.

Give up a storage track if necessary.

The area of the track your camera rested on will be the location of the other end of the runaround.

I dont know how much track is “Behind” the camera but you can put a run around there. Or provide a run around where the tank car is as an escape track with room for an engine and one car.

I’m doing a run around I just didnt install it due to I dont have enough RH turnouts and I dont know when I will get to buying any. The total track footage is roughly 9 feet. Might be a little less I have to try the ladder where it should be. Right now there is 5 total tracks I want to make it 5 so I have to play around with it.

Either I’m going to put some bushes, trees or when I install the facia it will be slightly taller to stop the chance of a wreck. I do have carpet on the floor but no padding. Once the layout is done I am replacing what I have for carpeting with something that looks better
