Looking at Google Earth,is that the Proviso yards just south of Ohare airport, looks like a big yard.thank you in advance
Hi -
CP (ex-Milwaukee) Bensenville is immediately south of O’Hare, to the south of Irving Park Road (IL-19). UP (ex-C&NW) Proviso is some distance south of this, running to the south of Lake Street in Melrose Park/North Lake, IL.

Immediately South of the airport is CP Rail’s (former SOO/former Milwaukee Road) Bensenville yard. Proviso is a little bit further South.
Proviso is a large facility that generally lies between Lake Street on the north and St. Charles Rd. on the south, from just west of 25th Avenue on the east to I-294 on the west.
Proviso is a very big place. Brother Carl drove us all around there last summer. He is working there right now and will be in later this pm for further on this subject.

And the landing pattern is such that the jets fly right over the tracks (near Bryn Mawr) at about 300’ in altitude…we can wave at the pilots as they pass over us.
Yep, I’m pretty sure you’re talking about Bensenville right south of the airport.
SJ, you and Driver may have seen about half of Proviso, tops, that day. When I had Brian and Joanie here, we drove over Mannheim bridge, about two-thirds of the way east (furthest you got was the diesel ramp, roughly the midpoint of the east-west portion). At the west end, the yard curves to the north and goes close to another mile that way.
Found it thank you, really a big yard.Going to see it when it warms up,if it ever does.
What’s really neat in the Google satellite view is that, if you zoom all the way in, you can see what looks like a covered hopper headed through the north retarder just east of Carl’s “perch”. Look on the west end of the east-west portion of the yard. The hump has a short line of cars being backed over the south track. Too bad the resolution isn’t just a little better- we could probably see Carl’s bicycle sitting there if he was working!
Not likely, Brian–the bike is kept inside the tower.
Big place, though, huh?
