This question is for any PRR fan.I am building a model kit of an old PRR brick engine house and am stuck on what color or colors to paint the wooden style doors and windows etc. Are the colors the same as any other traditional Pennsy building? Thanks.
According to Trackside on the Pennsylvania, Volume 2, it shows on page 59 that the window sills and window lintels on a brick engine house were to be of bluestone. It doesn’t show a color for the wooden doors, though, as part of the blueprint.
You would probably be safe in going with plain old brown. The only thing even close I could find was in Trackside on the Pennsylvania, Volume 1, which shows door colors on the plans for several different structures, all of which are shown as
“all trims, outlookers, fascia boards and other outside finish, also the stiles and rails of the doors, are to be painted dark PRR Standard. All panels of doors and other outside woodwork to be painted light PRR Standard.”
In the beginning of the book, it gives a recipe for these colors using Floquil paints. The light standard is 3/4 oz #11 Reefer White, six eyedroppers #70 roof brown and three eyedroppers #87 Depot Buff. The dark standard is 3/4 oz #70 Roof Brown and five eyedroppers #11 Reefer White.
I’m sure you could get a more accurate answer from the PRRT&HS. Check out their forum at http://p214.ezboard.com/bprrthsdiscussionweb30239
Hope this helps.
