PRR gon color

Are there any pennsy fans out there who can tell me the color or color match for PRR G26 gons as they would have been painted in 1940? Thanks for the help.

“Keystone Crossings” is a great place to find just about any info you need about the PRR. If they dont have it, they have links to it. The "PRR Talk " list is useful, as is “The Keystone Modeler”.

Pennsy? 1940s? All of these colors are acceptable:

FCC in Pennsy speak. Freight Car Color. It was a medium to dark shade of Tuscan red. They faded real fast. There is an online e zine from the PRR historical society. They did quite a few articles on Gons last year. You may have to spring for the CDs. Well worth the price. They have a wealth of knowledge in them.

There is an ongoing debate about “Freight Car Color”, which will probably never be fully resolved, but the current consensus seems to be:

FCC “evolved” from a very red color with a hint of orange in the earlier years, to a much browner color in the late 1940’s and 50’s.

Look at a Red Caboose X29 for a early example, and a Bowser X31 for a late example.

I believe the PRR T&HS considers both these acceptable, with a note that the latter could be a touch too brown.

If there are any actual members here, perhaps they could verify or dispute.

You are so right. Even from the different builders and repair shops it seems had their own shade of FCC. Some were so far off it looked as if it was a different color. I guess that is one standard that never was on the Standard Rail Road.
