I’m looking for some information on the PRR M1, particularly the backing light on the standard tender. I have an old brass model I’m converting over to DCC and would like to include it, if it needs it before I paint . I’ve searched the internet pictures trying to spot one but those photographers only seemed to do front quartering shots, and the resolution of the old b&w pictures doesn’t help much. I keep squinting and trying to look around the corner, but all I see is the side of my computer and a headache. Any help would be appreciated.
Maybe you can’t see it because it’s not mounted on “top” of the rear of the tender but mounted flush in the back of the tender???

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking but not seeing. All the pictures I have looked at fail to show the rear of the tender, and no real good views of the top either. I do see some class lights on the tender corners that I will add and just wanted some educated info on the exact location of the backing light. I mean, if I’m going to do it, I might as well do it right. It will also make a difference in how the decoder gets mounted in the tender.

The Bowser tender is not really a good model of the tender on the PRR M1 4-8-2. Here’s a picture from Alvin 'F. Staufer’s excellent reference book on the Pennsy, Pennsy Power. As you can see, exactly where the backup light is mounted depends on which tender the loco is using.
It depends on what tender you have. As far as I know there were 7 different tenders on the M1. Most would not have a white lite on the rear and depend on the markers and the ground crews. Most of the time the engineer would not know where the rear of the giant 250F 82 tenders were. Some passenger tanks had a bracket to hang a lamp if needed. Some were recessed like a previous poster said, these tanks would also have recessed /flush mounted markers as well. These are a class L and M photos for you.

Thank you gmcrail. The 110-P-82 looks spot on for what I’d have expected “around the corner”. I could make out the class lights, but I’m thinking the far one I was seeing was actually the backing light in the center. I’m guessing it wasn’t included on the model because it’s kind of small and not going to be easy to get a light into.
No, I don’t have the coast to coast tender, and this is an early M1 with only a single air pump. When I first acquired it I thought it was wrong but some picture hunting on the web proved otherwise. Thanks to all for the help.[:D]
I can’t say weather or not they are prototypically correct or not but on all of my BLI paragon M1’s four to be exact there is no large white back up light only markers on the top as indicated in the photo. I feel pretty confident that BLI wouldn’t miss a detail like that.
