PRR Passenger car on Amtrak's Adirondack

Today The PRR Passenger car “Braddock Inn” was on the Adirondack. You can see it here.

That’s a surprise, albeit a nice one.

I thought Amtrak wasn’t going to move private cars anymore?

I think they just are not going to let people ride on rear platforms.

No worries there with the “Braddock Inn”, it doesn’t have a rear platform!

They will move private cars, but will now only add/remove them at terminals, i.e., they will not switch them at intermediate points.

Thanks M-Mike, that’s good to know. Not that I have a private car, mind you.

Half a loaf is better than none I suppose.

So Private Car owner that don’t have them ‘headquartered’ at Amtrak Terminals get it in the shorts.

I’m just reporting, not supporting.

I rode the Saturday morning Rocket from Joilet to Chicago while waiting for that train I saw… what looked like a private car move cross the diamonds with a BNSF locomotive in the lead, a box car or two and what looked like an old baggage car in paint that was not Amtrak nor BNSF…might be BNSF acquiring a new car for it’s business train or it was a private car move for someone else using a freight carrier.

I am not taking issue with you - Anderson - Yes.

The thing Anderson needs to remember - Amtrak is political, no ifs, ands or butts about it. Private car owners are not Joe Sixpack. Private car owners have political clout and $$$$$$$$$$$ to make it happen.

It’s long been the case that if a private car owner wanted his/her car moved anywhere that wasn’t an Amtrak terminal that the car would be going as a freight car.

We’ve known that right along with regard to our operations. If we could have cars dropped at Utica, I’m sure we’d see a fair business in private cars on our line, but that’s not the case.

A car would have to be dropped at Renssellaer, be hauled by CSX (unoccupied) to Utica, then moved from the shortline’s tracks to ours (also unoccupied). And then the reverse to get it back on Amtrak. Hopefully without a side trip to Buffalo…

Well now I have to backtrack, as it seems Amtrak might be backtracking, or at least makng exceptions. One of the examples brought up by railfans when ATK made the new private car restrictions, was that private cars would not be added at MSP, even though ATK may have added/reomove a coach at Midway (?). Now ATK has indicated they would add some private cars at MSP (providing that the EB isn’t behind schedule) for an eventual move to the New River Train. The re-instated New River Excursion was also an “exception”.

Glad to hear about the exceptions for the New River Train. I’ll be riding it the 27th.
