I need to get into my new BLI J4 2-8-2 steamer for the required greasing and the instruction sheet says to first pry off the boilers cover and disconnect the headlamps wiring before proceeding. Before I go and break something, I’m assuming their talking about placing a knife blade in the seam (at red arrow)
and gently pry the front cover of the loco off.
Is that correct? Is that all you do?

My Boiler came off with three screws one at the front under the pilot mounting, and two at the rear, the light wiring used two little springs which are soldered to a circuit board on the chassis. the springs touched two pads on the boiler underside.
didn’t need to take off the front of the boiler. It did come off tho for light replacement.
When you get it off, run the loco real slow past you and watch the flywheel especially in reverse, see if it moves forwards and backwards (in and out of the gearbox) in time with the jerky-nis.

The LED sits right up against the cover, I am assuming, so you need to get the cover off so that when you do lift the boiler, you don’t break off the LED from its supporting wires.
The boiler cover on my BLI Hudson came off with out much resistance.
I gently worked it back and forth and it came off. I would assume that the
2-8-2 is similar. Good luck, Dave
i say don’t use a knife , they tend to leave marks when you slip or will sometimes distort the plastic if you apply too much pressure . my favorite tool for opening stuff up is a guitar pick . they’re thin , plastic , flexible , and they’re big enough to get a grip on
I got it off ok. I appreciate the guitar pick tip! Mine has a connector in the wiring harness so you can disconnect the wires and gently pull them down out of the way.
Thanks for the help!
