PTC is changing the way short lines operate
So if a short line handles toxic-by-inhalation materials or passengers they will have to install PTC on their lines and in their locomotives. If they exercise trackage rights over a line with PTC, they will have to install it in their locomotives. Understandable, but how did the Feds so grossly underestimate the number of short lines affected? And will museums and tourist railroads have to install PTC if they run excursions? Will mainline excursions only be allowed on lines with PTC? Finally, if the same money was invested in track and signaling, in tank car and passenger car crashworthiness, in employee training, or operation lifesaver, would more lives be saved than what PTC will save?
Just another example of the importance of getting government out of the free market.
