A while back on Cody’s office, they did a section on puff ball trees. I have done a search on the community and no one mentions where they get them, that I can find. Any ideas?
They get it from Micro-Mark:

I have gone through two ‘bales’ of the stuff - about 4,000 puff balls flocked and planted so far!

I believe the seminal article on this was in the July, 1990 MR; I know it was written by Don Cassler. If you do a search for Don Cassler in the model train article index, you can find the exact issue (the issue also featured Don’s M&K Division of the B&O on the cover in advance of the 1990 NMRA Convention, held in Pittsburgh that year). I have seen many people put the puff balls down first and then apply the ground foam, which ends up looking terrible. Spraying each puff ball with adhesive, and then rolling in ground foam before “planting” gives much better results. One other thing that Don does is to mix three packages of medium green, two packages of dark green, and one package of light green (Woodland Scenics) foam. This gives each puff ball a variegated and realistic appearence compared to pull balls all one color of foam.
