Queensland Garratts are 42" gauge, Puffing Billy is 30" gauge, but nevertheless it is a chunky Garratt. The correct Whyte arrangement is 2-6-0+0-6-2.
South African & Zimbabwian Garrats can be monsters again on 42" Gauge as are the Meter Gauge Garratts that operated on East African lines, mainly in Kenya.
Alco had a license for Garratts, pity they didn’t build any for the US market.
From personal experience I can vouch for the NSW standard gauge locos as being the smoothest running locos of their size.
Note the correct spelling is Garratt.

Puffing Billy is preservation at its finest. I strongly recommend anyone visiting the Melbourne-area to ride it at least once, even non railfans. And if you’re a railfan, try to ride the line all-the-way to Gembrook and back, it’s definitely worth it.

Beside, the commuter train ride from Flinders Street to Belgrave isn’t unpleasant either.

Wish you lot would check your stories before posting them. Dandenong is the correct location name spelling also the Garratt is a 2-6-0–0-6-2 configuration. Also New South Wales and Queensland railways had Garrett’s. The New South Wales Garretts where Standard Gauge monsters and queenslands where narrow gauge but much larger than the Puffing Bill one.

I visited the Puffing Billy in 1999. It is a funtastic railway. if you go to Australia you must visit it. Very friendly and you may even see a kangaroo. What other railway offers this!!!

Rode 'Billy back in 2000 and great, although they tolerated some riding practices that would give an American insurance executive a heart attack, like, for instance, people riding by sitting on the windowsills, legs on outside!

Was privileged to be one of the 10 million about a year ago. May it puff on for another 10 million!

A great achievement Puffing Billy from someone living 3000km away on the West Coast of Australia, been a few times and a great experience every time.

Also made were Australian Standard Garrett locomotives
(copies with an Aussie twist) for the narrow gauge networks .
Not popular on most state rail systems. Tasmania being the exception.
