As a metallurgist with over 35 years experience it is ridiculous to say the fracture occurred six years ago. One can say it is an old fracture by examining the fracture surface but to put a time frame on it, no way. Maybe having the car out of service for six years with an existing crack close to critical size was the basis of the assumption. If so there is something wrong with the stated inspection procedure.
