Purchased Scanner, Now What?

Hello. I just purchased my scanner, a Radio Shack Pro-82, and need some help finding radio and marine frequencies. Please indicate any websites you recommend for finding radio frequencies. I live in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Thanks for everyone’s help and advice on my previous post about scanners. I feel I have graduated to a higher level of railfanning.

OK, now have fun.

If you’re like the rest of us you may find you’ll want to replace the stock antenna with something else later down the line.

AMTRAK radio frequencies

U.S. Railroad frequencies

Radio Reference – one of the web’s better lookup sites

Radio Shack sells a fire/police/emergency radio frequency guide,. one of which will include your area.

Use Google to scan for whatever else you need.

Go online and find yourself a copy of Kalmbach’s “Compendium of Railroad Radio Frequencies” by Sturm and Landgraf which is nearly 10 years out of print. It should cost less than $20 for a like new copy. Think amazon.com here. Yes, there have been some changes but largely the book will get you in the ball park for the frequencies you need. I commonly carry all 97 of the FRA channels in one bank of the scanner at all times so I can just open up that bank at any time and let the scanner tell me which channels are active. Have fun.
