Pure Glycerin or Vegetable Glycerin ( to soak my tree's in )???

I’m told to make a Glycerin/water mix to soak some plant material in ( to make tree armatures ). I am coming up with pure which is about $1 an ounce, or vege which is about $14 a gal.

I have to assume vege, but thought I better ask around first.

I did this years ago, and I don’t remember. I think it was just glycerin. I was trying to perserve lichen i had havested off trees, at our place up north.

OK, I put my reply on hold, and went down and got a copy of Dave Frary’s book, “Realistic Model Railroad Scenery”, and the formular is:

3 gals. water, 1 gal. of the cheapest commercial grade (or yellow) glycerin you can find.

And to make it green, I package of green fabric dye.

Bring it to almost a boil, add the foliage, and continue heating to bring the solution to a simmer, and let it simmer for 5 minutes.

Let it cool to a point when you can put your hands in it, and remove the foliage, and squeeze out excess liquid back into the pot, and spread out to dry on absorbent material, such as newspaper or paper towels.

If you use a dye, remember to wear rubber gloves.

Mike.

Just the glycerin you can get at a drug store. It didn’t say on my bottle whether it was pure, virgin, vegetable, animial or mineral.
