Putting old engine in for repair - what to look out for....

I’m putting an old Lionel diesel in for repair - it isn’t running right, plus I noticed that the rollers on the middle track are scored. As I’ve never had anything repaired through a model train store, I’m a little paranoid of things like, oh, my train disappearing, getting socked for a lot of money for unnecessary work, etc. So how should I handle this?

DJSpanky,

Use a reputable dealer in your area. Talk with the repair person to see what their opinion is prior to leaving the loco. If you can catch them at a slow time, most are usually happy to pop the shell off and take a quick look so you can also see what you are going to encounter in the repair.

As the engine is old - you may wi***o keep your shell at home and just take the chassis. This minimizes risk to the body shell.

With the shell off - it will be easy to see what other problems may exist. Are the motor brushes extremely worn? Are there frayed wires that need replacing? Is the unit clogged with old hardened grease?

Thus you will be able to see how much repair may be needed - how much each repair may cost (ie brushes, wiring, etc.) - and then how much you can afford at the time.

Many shops have a posted cost per hour - typically with a 1 hour minimum or diagnosis charge. Most shops will call you after the diagnosis and then tell you the rest of the charges so you can make a decision on how far you wi***o go.

Then as always - you have to decide if the repair costs are in line with what the unit is worth. Hopefully all you need is a new pickup roller or roller and arm assembly. If so - the repair may be a few dollars up to $25/30 (new arm needed including labor).

I am hopeful that someone on this forum in you area can possibly provide a recommendation.

Regards.

DJ, I have had good experiences with my local ‘healer’ - it isn’t like your worst nightware of an automotive repair - more a treasure hunt to find what’s wrong and fix it - sometimes there’s a brief wait for parts- you’ll be thrilled when you get it back and it works!
