I have a Lionel 2322 not the best condition but runs like a top along with my 2348 and 2338 but would like to put a smoke unit in them. My old steamers have the piston type that forces the smoke out . My question is there a unit out there for my diesels that would force out the smoke thru my roof hole.I repair my own , soldering etc. Also where could i buy the part and any idea of cost. Thanks for any info.

You could get a new old stock=nos pistion unit from a steam locomotive on ebay or lionel even who knows with lionel in this new age of railsounds and such.[;)]
I’ve had pretty good luck with installing Seuthe smoke units in diesels.
What I did was buy a small seuthe unit intended for use in an HO engine. I then drilled a hole of the aproximate diameter of the unit in a small square of brass sheet, and soldered the brass body of the smoke unit to the sheet of brass. I soldered a wire to the brass sheet to act as a ground wire, and then hot glued the whole assembly under the smoke hole.
Seuthe units have no moving parts; the heating element is wound around a glass tube that draws in the smoke fluid by capillary action and then blows it out with some force.
Seuthe units are around $20 each, and should be available at most well-stocked hobby shops. I think that I used the #8.
TAS (Train America Studios) has one called turbo smoke, just for this purpose.
You cn use any fan driven smoke unit if there is room. I am doing it to dummies. For cummies, I get the pickups from the manufacturer. Those already powered, it easier. Make a bracket [from L corner brackets so you can adjust height] and use track power. If you are running in command like I do, I use bridge rectifiers to reduce voltage to keep from burning up the unit. I use ACE wide closed foam insulation [one side sticky] for gasket between top of unit and shell.
Could you add a smoke to one of the newer Legacy Lionel Diesels that have everything except smoke?
