Hello All:
A relative newbie to the repair game here. I am rewiring a 623 PW switcher that was working before I touched it. I replaced the wire from the rear coupler to the front coupler because of old crusty insulation. On the front coupler I wired in my new wire along with the black wire from the shoe and pickup group . I have a grey wire from this group going to the front light and a red one going to the E unit. Now when I apply power to the unit the motor runs slow and both couplers heat up very fast to the touch. I suspect a short but am unable to discover where. Any ideas on where iI should look? Are couplers shorting to the frame? I only messed with this one wire replacement. Thanks for any insight. Also, both lights work fine and motor turns, but slow.

Actually, I think that the āClassic Toy Trainsā category might be better here.

It sounds kinda like you accidentally re-wired it so that the coil couplers are constantly getting power. Which they should not!
When wired correctly, the shoe on the front truck is connected via a short wire to the coil coupler on the front truck. A second, longer wire, runs back from this point through the locomotive, to the coil coupler on the rear truck. These are the ONLY wires that should be connected to the coil couplers and the shoe.
It sounds like you have wired the shoe and the pickup rollers together somewhere perhaps?

Thanks El. The short wire from the pickup to the front coupler is the same one on it before I tried my āmagicā repair. I will check the shoe to see if for some reason it is causing constant power. to be delivered. Your insight helped and explained the heat. Thanks
