Quality of replacement Searchlight Car Lamp Brackets

A few weeks ago, I bought a 3520 searchlight car from the junk bin at the local shop. For what I paid for it, as could be expected for the $10 I paid, it was missing the entire lamp housing.

After some rewiring, it tested fine with the lamp off of my other(good) 3520, and I went ahead and ordered a replacement lamp housing.

Upon receiving it, I noticed that I couldn’t get the bracket(part 3520-7) to sit properly on the magnet/lamp. I’d though originally that perhaps it could just be because of the overall condition of the car, however the original assembly off my other car sits on it properly. Futhermore, the new replacement bracket sits the same way on my good car.

Looking at the base of the new bracket, I see that it’s jagged and uneven, while the original is smooth and perfectly flat on the bottom.

All of this normally wouldn’t be that big of an issue to me, except that the housing doesn’t rotate properly-it’s uneven and sometimes stops.

Here are some photos showing what I’m talking about.

The junk-bin car is on the left, the good one is on the right. Notice the gap between the base of the bracket and the car on the car on the left.

Here are the brackets switched between the two cars-notice that the original bracket still sits properly and the replacement still sits uneven.

Finally, here’s a comparison of the bottoms of the two brackets. It’s a bit hard to see, however if you look carefully, you can see what I’m talking about with the wavy bottom of the replacement bracket.

I’m sure that the parts dealer from whom I purchased the bracket will send me a refund or replacement. I’m wondering, however, if any other folks out there who have pur

Ben, I feel your pain as I get really frustrated with poor repro parts. It’s really hit or miss with repro.

Perhaps you could grind the base of the housing so it’s truly flat. Other than that there’s ebay, but I’m sure this part would cost way more than the car.

Ben,

The problems you’re experiencing aside, I don’t think the repro is even a close match to the original. I think you can do better elsewhere. If you bought the part off of Grandpa, he will assuredly refund your money. Not an issue. Try looking up this part on Jeff Kane’s Train Tender web site.

A quick question: Did you order a new “gasket” to go on the bulb base, and do you have the correct bulb? I ask because, I have what appears to be the same repro. items as you, and mine fits and works fine.

Ben,

That bracket is definitely a repro. On these reproes, the metal used for the bell housing is thinner than the metal Lionel used. Do you have a Dremel tool? If so, use it to even out the bottom of the bell housing. You can also use a flat file to do this by hand.

Interesting. I picked up a 3620 at my Train Shop missing everything for a $1.I need to start looking for my missing parts.
