Quartering

Guys

Need some info on how to quarter my steamers wheels and if there is a tool out there to use.

Thanks

Northwest Shortline has a quartering tool. See 44-4 on this link: http://www.nwsl.com/uploads/cat_chap1_TOOLS-web_9-20.pdf

They also have a pulling tool to get the driver off the axle, also shown on the link.

What leads you to believe the drivers are out of quarter?

Andre

Because there were nickles on the tracks.

Nick.

The NWSL quarterer is a is a good tool to have just for checking quarter also. Remember to do the whole set of drivers not just the one or two. If there are five driver sets then check all five. When I do a tune up to my steamers I always check quarter and also side rods. The rods should match up perfectly with each other and the axle holes in the frame. If the holes are worn out then you have a couple of options to repair them. Either peen the holes to make them slightly smaller or solder the holes up and ream them to size. I clamp them to the frame and use a set of axle bearings to keep them in alignment. I know they will run good for a long time when the chassis with valve gear minus the gear box rolls across a piece of glass.

I have the quarterer and the puller. Both work well.

Don’t get drawn into this quartering thing. [:-^]

Is there an N scale pulling and quartering tool? Might prevent me from selling my Kato 2-8-2 Mikado…

Thank You MaxMan it is exactly what I need.

Note that drivers don’t have to be quartered at 90 degrees. They DO have to be quartered at the SAME angle. Whether that angle is 89 degrees or 91 degrees won’t affect the operation of the model.

That’s another reason to check ALL the drivers.
