Question about American Flyer S Guage Trains?

Were the trains made by A.C. Gilbert considerd toy trains or model trains? Some engines like the hudson and pacific are so detailed they seem like model trains but were they more of a toy train like Lionel?

There are some trains that Gilbert marketed as Tru-Scale. I agree that they are very detailed, and Gilbert did try to play up this aspect of their trains as being realistic: “Real two rail track, puffs real smoke”, but its my impression they were always intended to be toys marketed to children, but purchased by parents.

Northwoods Flyer

They were marketed to both kids and adults

Detailed yet very tough and could take rough handling
