Is the Athearn bulkhead flatcar basically the same car as the Roundhouse bulkhead flatcar? Athearn says theirs is a 60 footer and Roundhouse said theirs was a 62 footer. I have a couple of the Roundhouse models and have some Jaeger loads that fit them exactly. I’d like to add a couple of the Athearn cars to my fleet, but was uncertain if the loads would fit. In photos the Athearn cars look to be identical. Did Athearn pick up this model from Roundhouse? All information will be appreciated. Thanks!
IIRC the Roundhouse car and the Athearn car are the same cars and the Jaeger load will fit…The Roundhouse cars was release as RTR with metal wheels.
Horizon Hobby, which purchased Athearn in 2004, also purchased Model Die Casting (Roundhouse) in 2004, and the 2 companies merged with the Roundhouse name to be used only for Pre-WW II products. The rest of the Roundhouse line, including the bulkhead flats, is produced under the Athearn name. As info, Athearn also produced loads for these bulkhead flat cars. Athearn Item 90439 is a pipe load, 90440 is undecorated lumber, 90441 is decorated for Hampton Lumber, 90442 is Simpson Lumber, and 90443 is Tree Source Lumber.
