I just bought a used engine at a train show. It’s an Athearn GP40-2 Powered Alaska loco (Number 3014). The number on the box is 04741. It wouldn’t run when I got it home. I removed the shell and it runs fine, but once the shell is back on, it won’t run. No power or anything. Any suggestions? I’m brand new to model railroading, and having a blast so far, but can’t figure this one out.
Can you post a photo with the shell off. It sounds like a motor wire is either loose or pinched with the shell on the chassis.

I agree that a picture would clear up some confusion. Not having a picture, I will venture a shot in the dark guess. On the BB SD40-2 I rebuilt, I discovered after a bunch of troubleshooting that with the shell on, the light bar was making contact where it wasn’t supposed to. I ended up gluing a thin piece of styrene to insulate it. It doesn’t cause operational problems with the styrene. It is just a thought.
