question about atherns engines

I ended up getting a couple Atherns engines today at the local hobby shop. They were on consignment and the owner of the shop tested them before selling them and ran great. Both ran like they were brand new. Both came with thei original boxes. On the end of the boxes is stamped some info. What does it mean? Sorry for sounding little neive. On the first box its stamped:

4165

sd45 pwr

santa fe.

On the other box its stamped

4608

sd45 pwr

Santa fe.

Thanks for the info.

They’re a good choice, good runners and pull like crazy.

The info means that the engines are Santa Fe SD45’s and you will note that the cab/ road numbers of the units should show same as the box.

4165 is the part number for Blue Box SD45’s

4608 should also be a part number but it traces back to a GP38-2. not an SD45

Could be a numbering system change at sometime

I agree with the BB locomotives.

The RTR SD45s part numbers for the Santa Fe SD45s would similar to this ATH98014 and the RTR Santa Fe GP38-2 will have the newer part numbers like this ATH78899.

Here’s a good place to find info and instructions on yours and many others.

Athearns numbering method was like this:

4160 was a powered undecorated SD 45

4161 through 4179 are assigned to decorated powered models. Note: Not all numbers are used.

4165 is the p/n for a powered SF SD 45.

4180 was an undecorated dummy SD 45

4181 through 4189 are assigned to decorated dummy models. Note: Not all numbers are used.

4608 is the p/n for a SF GP 38-2.
