Question about Central Valley Track Maintenance

If you use CVT tie strips and glue the rails to the strips according to their directions (barge cement, etc), are there any long-term considerations about cleaning the track (or ‘gleaming’ the track), or fragility of the track?

I haven’t got to that stage yet, John, but contact-type cements are about as permanent as you’ll find. I had rolling stock with older Kadee mechanical-style couplers glued in place with contact cement (metal draught gear boxes on metal cars) and they were still difficult to remove after being in place for over 40 years.

John.

I used Pliobond and Walthers GOO to glue my rails. I did a test of different adhesives before laying the first rail. Both of those products were stronger then the ties. I could not pull the rail off the tie without breaking it. Epoxy, super glues, rubber cement, and liquid nails all failed miserably. I did use a roller to apply pressure to the rail after gluing and am sure it helped the bond. The roller was from the wall paper tooling section of the local hardware store.

Gleam away.

Thanks guys, that’s what I wanted to know.
