Good Morning!
I would like to ask a few questions about CSXT.
- Did they ever have a almost full YN2 Roster from 1990-1999?
- Did any CSX AC6000CWs need rescuing from other units?
- How long are Coal Freights typically?
I looked these up, and I’m not getting any luck from Google, so my next option was here before trying ChatGPT.
Retired over 8 years ago.
In the 1990’s when Dash-8’s were the normal road power - 90 cars was the normal coal train size.
In the 2000’s with AC power being the normal road power - 100 cars was the normal train size.
CSX began using DPU’s after I retired. Normal Export coal trains operating into Baltimore are now 135 cars.
The real size of most coal trains is defined by the end users ability to handle a specific train size as dictated by their unloading ability. Unit Train rates for bulk commodities normally dictate 24 hours for loading the entire train and 24 hours for unloading the entire train. If the Shipper or Consignee take longer there are specified penalties specified in the contracts granting the rates.

Oh, Wow - Ok, that’s good to know at least for the coal freight one. Now I’ll start getting rosters planned for SL tonight! Thank you @BaltACD, to be honest, I had no clue you used to work for CSX - I have so many questions now, but I’m not going to list them off so I don’t overwhelm you. But that’s really cool!
The CXS coal trains that run here are 100 cars long.
