Question about inherited n scale trains...

I received a few nscale trains from my father in law. I am trying to figure out the model and make of these 4 engines… I already tried looking online but I cant seem to find them. (Basically I want to know what train they are modeled after)

here is a link to thier pictures… I tried to get the best one’s I could be I wasn’t able to get real clear photos for some reason…

password is trains

here are the details on each train:

Atlantic Coast line… Road number is 500. Colors are Silver with Purple and Yellow. Lifelike brand. Numbers are stamped on the bottom in white… 09095…

Seaboard Coastline Road number is 1201… It is painted black with yellow stripes.

Atlantic Coast line Road number 109… Colors are black with yellow stripes.
This is a kato no. 17718

Burlington Switcher… road number 9280 Colors are Red wiht silver and white… This is a bachmann

Any information you have about any of these it would be soo much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

The site didn’t open for me, so I couldn’t see the locomotives. I’ll try again later if you don’t get any clear answers.

Meanwhile, you might try this site, the N Scale Locomotive Encyclopedia:

the first one appears to be a F7-A
the second one looks almost like a dash 9, but i’m not sure
same for the third
the last one is some sort of yard engine, though i’ve never seen one like it before

now, i might be wrong on all counts [:I] because i never got interested in diesel power enough to be able to ID them from pics/sight alone (now steam on the other hand i might’ve been a little more helpful)

That last on looks like the Plymouth switcher thats currently available from Bachmann.

Here’s a link;

I could be wrong though as I’m like Ne06874 in that I don’t really do the “D” word.[8D]

Man you are way off…

Mr. Rusty:

The ACL 500 is an EMD E unit. Not sure if its an E7/8/9, etc…

The ACL 109 unit is an EMD GP7 or GP9.

The SCL 1201 unit is an ALCO RS-3.

The Burlington unit is a Plymouth industrial switcher.

I know the 500 is an E unit by the C-C wheelbase - which model of an E unit would require a closer look.

I know the 109 is either a GP7 or GP9 because of the EMD body with pointed nose and contours. AND THE BLOMBERG TRUCKS!!

I know the 1201 is an RS-3 by the lack of cab overhang, round hood contours and details that distinguish it from other RS units.

The Plymouth can’t be confused with anything.

The ACL 500 looks like an EMD E unit to me.
The ACL 109 could be a GP7, GP9, RS-10 or RS18. They are all almost identical with the only visible difference being horsepower…

the SCL 1201 is either an RS1, RS2 or RS3, made popular by ALCO.

Hope this helps some…
Trevor

1st is EMD E8-A
2nd is an ALCO RS 1 2 or 3 , i don’t know how to tell the difference
3rd is an ALCO RS 11 (probably)
4th is the Plymouth switched mentioned above

ok i don’t really know anything about diesels either , these guesses are based on the website provided by egmurphy

Trevor and ereime:

That is also way off!! Look at the nose, its an EMD Geep - not an ALCO RS10/11/18!! And horsepower is not a visible difference!!

And, an RS-1 can not be mistaken for an RS-2 or RS-3 - look at the lack of cab overhang and round contours of the hood and details -its an RS-3!!

PLEASE stop guessing and check out what I posted already.

i knew i was wrong… thats the last time i try and ID diesel…

sorry about the misinformation

[banghead]

first , i’m allowed to guess if i want , and i did say it was a guess
second , i was writing my response at the same time you were but my wife interupted me so i ended up posting after you did so i couldn’t have read what you already posted
third , thank you for pointing out the differences between my guesses and reality , i now know a little bit about diesels

#1 EMD E8 or E9 it has port holes the E7 had square windows

#2 is an Alco RS2 or RS3 Kato makes the RS2, Atlas makes the RS3. It appears there are horns on both front and rear of the cab which would make it an Atlas RS3.

#3 EMD GP7 without dynamic brakes or early GP9 without dynamic brakes. The main distinguishing feature between the 7 and 9 is the louver arrangement on the sides. I am pretty sure its a GP7. On late GP9’s there were two larger fans on the roof instead of four fans. If the unit had dynamic brakes there would be a dynamic brake blister (bulge) with a single large fan on it centered on the roof of the long hood. — I am pretty sure Kato has never marketed a GP7 or 9 under their brand name. Many years ago they made GP’s for Atlas. They had incorrect truck spacing. I believe too close. The truck spacing in the photo does not look right. Too big a space at the front and rear of the loco. Latter GP’s by Atlas are from different tooling and are correct.

Thank You very much for the information. I normally would go looking for a specific model for my railroad so I always knew what I had, but this has led me to be very bad at identifying locomotives(one of my downfalls). So when I was given these models by my father-in-law I tried to id them by looking online but, couldn’t find them. He bought them for the road names and didn’t know one from the other. So again thank you very much for helping me to id thes models.
