Question about Matte Medium

I was wondering if the matte medium you see in the craft store for mounting photographs etc. is the same or close enough as the product sold by Scenic Express? I’ve used S/E mat-medium in the past and like it for ballast primarily but hate paying for shipping if I can drive 15 minutes and take it off the shelf?

Thanks

Yes. I have used it for a bunch for years. I used the brand Modge Podge mostly but have used other brands too. Thin with water as needed.

Matte Medium is exactly what W/S and Scenic Express make their stuff out of. Dilute it with 3-4 parts water to 1 part matte medium and you should have a similar mix.

Although I’ve never used the SE matte medium I’m reasonably sure that it and the matte medium from craft stores are equivalent. I’ve used matte medium from art supply stores and from Michael’s craft store and have not seen a noticeable difference.

Thank you all for the quick reply, thats what I suspected so it’s off to AC Moore and an afternoon of ballasting track

Thanks guys

What about using elmers’s Glue-All, wouldn’t that be cheaper? You can get a 8oz bottle for under $3.00, or a gallon for under $13.00 at HD or Lowes.

Yup, white glue is ‘cheaper’. But if you don’t like lots of track noise, I would go with Matte Medium. It dries soft, not rock hard like the white glue(which transmits the track noise to your plywood/foam base)

Jim.

I did not know that it would be noisier… Thank you!! Just one more thing to think about…

I use thinned Elmer’s. I also use Matte Medium–be sure to use the coupon for AC Moore.
