Question about NS locomotives.

Did any of the locomotives from the Original Norfolk Southern end up in the post 1982 Norfolk Southern?

Some of them did. See also this Web page (scroll down to the section “Sorted by Equipment - Engines.”

You could look over the Norfolk Southern diesel roster to see if any are still in service (probably GP-38s as road slugs or rebuilds) but I do not believe there are.

An interesting aspect of the original Norfolk Southern’s diesel fleet once it was merged with Southern Railway was the fact that the new owner actually rebuilt the former NS GP-38s with high noses to match the rest of their fleet!

Original Norfolk Southern EMD GP18 units 1-17 were rebuilt by Southern Railway with high short hoods and setup for long hood forward operation in the early 70’s, becoming SOU (NS) 180-196. These units became NS 180-196 after the merger with the N&W. They were retired in 1985 and 1986, none having been repainted in NS paint.

Original Norfolk Southern EMD GP38 units 2001-2007 were rebuilt by Southern Railway with high short hoods and setup for long hood forward operation in the early 70’s, becoming SOU (NS) 2880-2886. These units became NS 2880-2886 after the merger with N&W. They were retired between 1993 and 1996, all having been repainted into NS paint.
