Question about online freight car listings

When Kadee lists an HO scale car (made in the USA) on their site and in the desription it says

Rd No. 35240, Built 1957,

it means the REAL car was built on that date, right?

Correct.

Yes, that number indicates a date that the prototype could have been built. It’s not old stock that has been sitting on the shelf since 1957. I have to assume that model manufacturers use correct dates.
