When you have DCC and you want two or more locomotives to work together, how do you get that to work? do you just program all of them at the same time with the same numbers?
Short answer is ‘NO’. Each locomotive has its own ‘address’. It only moves when you send it orders to. Thus the track has constant power and the individual locomotives are turned off and on according to your orders.

If you are going to always run these engines together (e.g. a F7A unit & a F7B unit) you can assign them the same address after you have run them independently to be sure that they run at the same speed.
If there is a chance that you will run them as separate units, then it is more feasible to assign them different addresses and then consist them so that they run as a single unit.
Hope this helps…Ken
The answer to your question is you “consist” them. The system will have a procedure to connect the two as far as the DCC system is concerned.
I have an NCE system.
If I want a consist, I puhe “Consist Setup” button.
Then I puhe “Add loco” button
I enter the first loco number then, its direction . I repeat this for each loco I want to add. Each consist has a 2 digit “Consist number”. However the NCE system allows the consist to be accessed by selecting the lead unit.
I hit “Select Loco”, dial in the lead engine number, hit enter, and then all the engines in the consist move as one in the same direction.
