Question about selling on ebay and Paypal!!

I sold an engine on ebay for about $300.00 and the buyer did an instant payment on ebay to buy the item. But, the funds are on hold until the buyer gets the engine and is happy with it and there is no disputes. I had a no return policy on the engine. The 300.00 is pending in my paypal account, but not available for me to move it into my bank account. Is the money mine? paypal says it is okay to ship. What should I do?? thanks.

Ship it by the method and cost you stated on EBay.

If you don’t ship it, you will more than likely find out how nasty Pay Pal can deal with sellers that don’t fulfill the terms of the EBay and Pay Pal agreements.

Who cares at this point about your no return policy. The buyer can’t even think about returning it, because they don’t have it at this point. The buyer according to you has fulfilled the terms of the agreement as of this date. Very soon the buyer is going to get very upset and complain loudly to EBay and/or Pay pal that he paid and did not receive his merchandise.

Hi, i sell on Ebay and I’ve never shipped with a payment pending. It probably was an e-check (electronic} and it hasn’t cleared yet. Are you sure Paypal says its ok to ship? Does it still say pending? Sometimes Paypay will hold your funds for a while.I’ve never had that happen but have heard of it. I would call Paypal. I’ll try to post the phone number later

Got it!! Now, I will ship the engine to him on thursday morning and be done with it. Now, what if he wants his money back or the engine is damaged in shipping?? I will have UPS package and ship the engine. He did not purchase insurance. I guess I will ship it uninsured and hope it makes it to him safely. Only going a few hundred miles, like 300 miles i think. I am worried that he will get his money back when he has the engine in his possession. Because the funds are pending. Not exactly mine are they?? Sounds weird, never had this problem before. Bottom line is I have to ship it and wait for 3 days after delivery to get hold off the funds. Thanks.

Make sure that you purchase delivery confirmation / tracking on it. You will need it if there’s a payment dispute. I believe tracking is included with UPS shipments, but ask. For future use, here’s the number for Paypal 1-402-935-2050. Good luck

I called paypal, and paypal says its okay to ship. All sounds wierd. I hope its not a scam. I will get that delivery confirmation. Thanks.

It does sound like an e-check, which is excruciatingly slow to clear. There is no advantage to doing this through PayPal.

I’ve never heard of shipping anything connected with eBay “on approval” - it sounds like the old stamp collecting method of mail order sales. If you did not approve of this somewhere in your terms, you don’t have to follow through.

On this matter, I would not ship it until you get the funds. Refund the PayPal payment immediately, there is no charge or penalty for doing this. eBay won’t jump on you as it will only look like the buyer has not paid yet, you are not “holding back” the merchandise. If the buyer then wants to make a regular PayPal transfer, from funds or a credit card(recommended - offers buyer protection), & does, ship it out.

Your “no refunds” or “no returns” policy is too restrictive. Always allow inspection privileges, after paying, with some kind of return/exchange policy. This usually placates nervous buyers(making them avoid pulling stunts like this guy did to you).

You must buy insurance. It should have been included in your S&H, and if you couldn’t con the buyer into paying for it on a line item basis, then you have to ante-up. The insurance protects the seller/shipper, not the buyer/recipient. It is your duty to deliver the merchandise as advertised.

AND, if you really are shipping UPS, then double-to-triple box it and pad/cushion well, prepare for it to get run over with a truck or dropped from a third-floor warehouse conveyor. If there is no damage to the outer box, they won’t pay a claim for damage.

If the buyer does not have a credit card attached to his Paypal account there will be a hold until it clears his bank. Even he decides to return the item, I don’t think Paypal will refund him until you have the item back in your possesion. Make no mistake though, Paypal WILL take the money back from you if the buyer is unhappy regardless of why. This and the high Paypal fees is why I don’t like using Paypal.

Roger

Only with the e-check. A transfer, or payment from account balance, is instant.

Rob

This is only true IF there is a paypal balance. If there is a credit card attached to the account the money can come straight from the checking account if there is no Paypal balance. Otherwise you wait.

Roger

UPS insures the 1st $100 but each additional $100 is about 30-40 cents. Well worth it. Tracking # e-mails go to both the shipper & receiver. Easy to watch the whole process.

Well, as it turns out, the address he wants me to mail it to is an Army Post Office. So I had to ship with USPS. He did not want it insured. But, I did get the tracking number and delivery confirmation. I packaged it all myself, and did a very good job at that. So if the funds have a hold on them, then it is not my money until he gets the item and is happy. I have a no return policy. And what if he is not happy with it, do the funds go back to him?? He did pay me the funds, but are pending until the hold is lifted. So, if he is not happy with the item, he will ask for his funds back, but he already paid me the funds and the transaction has been completed. My part is over with, I shipped them to the address on ebay and he will get the item he paid for. Guess all I have to do is wait til the item gets delivered to him. thanks.

Here’s an insert from the Paypal website. They’re always changing the rules. Hope this helps

When will the hold on my eBay payment be the released?

If your eBay payment is being held, PayPal may release it when one of the following is met: - The buyer leaves positive feedback after receiving the item. (Payments are released 24 hours after feedback is left.) - After 21 days have passed without a dispute, claim, chargeback or reversal filed on that transaction. - 3 days after PayPal confirms item delivery. If you see On Hold Ship Now next to your transaction, this means that the funds are in your pending balance and you must ship the item in order to receive your payment.

The sooner the buyer receives the item, the sooner you’ll receive positive feedback.

PayPal can confirm delivery if you use USPS, UPS, or FedEx to ship the item and use PayPal shipping labels, or upload tracking information to PayPal through the transaction details page. This applies to US domestic transactions only.

If you receive a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal on the transaction subject to the eBay item hold, we may hold the payment until the problem is resolved, even if the claim, chargeback, or reversal occurs after the hold is released.

Wonderful! And what if the buyer does not leave feedback?

In that case then then his shipping confirmation or after 21 days without a dispute will do it. You only need one out of the three. Read it again. Paypal may have held the funds if the seller[sigh] only had a few feedbacks. It’s all about the buyer these days.

I did catch that on the first read. In the spring I sold a number of items to one buyer in Australia who did the money transfer thing. Paypal notified me that payment was “pending” and also that they would notify me when the money was in my account and at that time the items could be shipped.

Now it’s a whole new ballgame further inconveniencing the honest seller.

Stipulate right on your auctions " NO E-CHECKS " and if desirable "NO OVERSEAS SHIPMENTS " … I myself will only buy via paypal … sending funds through our mail system was risky to say the least … even money orders . Some don’t realize how many lousey sellers sell an item and send a completely different or already damaged one .

As a seller I don’t like all the fees involved in using ebay and having to use paypal but as a buy I like the security and as a seller I like the fact the buyer can feel safe to make the purchase

lionel2: I buy and sell on E-Bay so I think I know how you feel. (Been there, done that.) At this point, may I suggest that you “relax” (I know, it’s easy for me to say!) and use this experience as a learning exercise. I’m sure, from my many dealings on the system, everything will work out just fine. If perhaps, you run into a ‘snag’, use E-Bay Live Help or Paypal’s phone contact. I have found both to be reliable. Good luck and keep us posted.

Okay, got it!! The item is shipped, just have to wait til I get confirmed delivery. Thanks.
