Question about the Cornerstone Sanding Facility

Hi!

I’m looking to adding a second sanding facility to my layout and the Cornerstone version 933-3182 comes with an “early” tower and a more “modern” tower with multiple hoses. My question is, what time frame would the “modern” tower cover (earliest time period)?

Thank you!

Thanks for your question on Walthers Sanding Tower kit, #933-3182.

To some extent, your choice of towers depends on the size and type of facility you have planned.

The “older” tower is primarily a steam-era design, but many remained in use for years, especially at outlying terminals and branchline facilities, as well as on shortlines where cash was hard to come by.

A quick search through several books shows the “modern” towers were in use by the late 1950s, and can be seen servicing first generation F units, E units, and Alcos on various roads at bigger and busier facilities. This tower could also be modified for use at a less busy location by removing some of the spouts to serve just one or two tracks.

Good luck with your project!

Thank you Walthers!

I have a similar question on the Cornerstone Diesel Fueling facilities in the Model Railroader “prototype info” category. Perhaps you could address that one too!

In any case, thanks for putting out some wonderful kits, I really appreciate them!
