Question about Walthers Glacier Gravel Co.

I am considering getting the Glacier Graver Co. in HO and was wondering how detailed and advanced the kit is to build. Also I would like to know how much real estate I would need to make a descent looking rock quarry on my layout. Has anyone ever made a rock quarry using the above mentioned structure that might post a pic or two here.

I am trying to get some kind of idea on what I can do with the new layout I am building.

Back around 1984 MR did the original"glacier Gravel" built into a hillside.Its was a kitbash of diffrent kits availible at the time.The walthers kit is a adaptation of the MR project and is not that difficult to build.

I have two in the boxes. I plan to kitbash them this winter/spring into a large blue stone facility on two levels of track. Sorry but since it isn’t there yet I can’t post any photos! [swg]

One of the members of our group at the Boothbay Railway Village built one for our Dragon Cement quarry. There is a photo of it near the bottom of the linked page:

It seems to be a fairly straigtforward kit. We have not installed the conveyors yet; we need to design a “hole in the ground” for them to go into. There is also a rock screen structure that goes at the head end of the conveyor in the bottom of the hole to separate out rocks too big for the crusher. Also some stairs on the side of the building are awaiting some scenery work before they are installed.

The key to a kit with large walls is to be sure they are straight and true with 90 degree corners. If a wall is misaligned, it will affect the whole structure. I think this kit has no foundation or base. When you are gluing the walls together, put the corners on the inside corner of a carpenters square, and keep them there until the glue sets.
