Question about weathering

I am weathering a SF loco and an ATSF caboose using a wash or real fine dirt I get from old air filters from tractors and alchol. When the alchol dries it leaves a whith film, I tried using clean water as a final wash, but it dries the same, What is the secret to making it dry not so much white? Mike

What are you doing to the engine before you apply the wash? It should be cleaned well to get rid of oils, etc.

I was at a weathering clinic last night. The instructor’s technique was to spray the model with Dul-Coat, brush and rub on weathering powders, and then spray with Dul-Coat to set it. The first spray helps the powder stick to the surface.

If you’ve already got the engine Dul-Coated, then the alcohol in the wash will fog and whiten it. I’ve never done that myself, but I think you can just put on more Dul-Coat and it will clear up. I’d try it on something you care less about than an engine first, though.
