I have not had any fellow condrs/brkmn that were problem workers. One hoghead is just a pain in the neck. He is the type that you may not have worked w/for three yrs and five min into the trip he will be griping. One night I caught this dude off the xtra bd. We were departing and I told him I was showing out like 2030. He then stated he was going to use the exact time like 2027 or something like that and he got mad because I wasn’t going to do it his way even though everyone always rounds the times off. Stuff like that isn’t worth the time to gripe over. To me, thats a person who has some type of disorder. And this dude wonders why his wife divorced him.
Yes Jeff it was Mort and just because you found the timetable i was looking for is not the only reason I enjoy working with you . Its a pleasure to work with someone who like me enjoys railroading and enjoys the history of the railroads as I do Larry
An engineman I know would love single-person trains. I, as a non-employee, in the past felt it was better to have two people in the cab. But after what that engineman said, I’m not sure anymore …
the day it goes to one man crews is the day i might just walk off the job and hang it up… i dont care if i cant stand the perosn sitting across from me or not… it is nice knowing that you have someone there with you when your in the middle of nowhere at 3am… it realy is nice when you have someone in the cab with you that also has his engineers card… the 2 of you can take turns running… for the most part everyone dose get alone with everyone… but just like everything human… people are going ot have bad days and not everyone is going ot get alone all the time for any number of reasons… my personal observation as far as people not getting along is the partly the generational gap… you get old heads that are set in there ways and dont know how how to deal with younger employees or dont like haveing to take orders from someone that is 20 or 30 years younger then them… i personaly get along better with some of the people that are around my own age then i do with some of the older heads… we relate better to eachother since we are the same generation compaired to someone that is a few decads older… not saying that i havent made some friends and got along with the people that are older in age then me… just get along with more of them that are closer to my own age as compaired to the older people…at least that is how i see it…
I like having someone to talk to and I heartily agree that on line of road it is great having two qualified engineers. Before I was set up I never understood how much concentration it takes to run, especially with a challenging train on difficult mountain terrain. Having also run remotes (not the Class 1 style, the older style with the real locomotive like controls that requires a carded engineer to operate) I think I could handle a one person assignment on a limited basis, perhaps like IRR does it switching industrial parks and the like. I don’t think I would be as comfortable on line of road by myself, especially operating over public crossings without rear end protection or protection by a camera only.
