Question for older train buffs

I am having a hard time finding information on steam era rolling stock online.

Seems alot of searches I make end only in someone wanting me to subscribe to an organization or purchase a book to get small amounts of information.

Heck, I have even tried a couple of news groups only to be chastised for not doing any research on the subjects myself - which I’ve tried - but coming up empty.

Is anyone familiar with a website or forum or anything online where a person can get information on freight car lettering in the 1940’s?

Several roads changed logos and lettering during this time and before I begin creating a fleet of cars I’d like some answers to a few puzzling questions so I can be as accurate as possible.

Seems like folks would be more willing to share thier knowledge with others who are keenly interested in what they have learned. Sadly, this hasn’t been what I’ve gotten the past couple of weeks of searching.

I’d appreciate any suggestions for research or anyone willing to give a little time in chatting with me if they have any expertise on this subject.

Thanks in advance!!

Did you try the yahoo group, Steam Era Freight Car Discussion Group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/STMFC/

If you did, and someone chased you off, then my apologies.

I did find this forum but I believed I had to join to access the site. Am i right? Looks like a great place for getting info.

Like any Yahoo group you have to subscribe to it. If you don’t want to use your real e-mail account, create a new Yahoo one, like I did. It takes about 1 minute.

RWM

Yes you are. That is a policy of Yahoo Groups.

Actually isn’t it ultimately the policy of the group owner rather than Yahoo? The are many Yahoo groups I can access the messages on a read only basis as a non member. I can understand why for privacy reasons the owner may wish to restrict access to the public, but the converse is that it may discourage potential members. I know there are one or two groups I have considered joining but as I have not been able to read the messages in order to judge the quality of the discussion I decided not to bother.

You can use a Yahoo or Gmail email account you create just for this purpose, subscribe, spend 2 minutes glancing at it, and cancel if you don’t like it. I guess I am baffled if there is a reluctance to do this.

RWM

OK. Thanks for the invite guys!![:D]

I went to the Yahoo group you mentioned and registered.

I get a message that I must be approved by the monitor of the group. I guess I’ll wait to hear from them.[:-^]

I don’t have a problem in privacy. My real name, address, phone number, and the like, are things I willingly share with others in the hobby with those who care to know.

I find that 99% of railfans are very good people to know with superb morals and most are as equally as excited to share their knowledge with me as I am with them.[8D]

Thanks again!![:D]

I believe that I’m a member of this Yahoo group, but I haven’t visited Yahoo for years. I should be in about four freight-car-related groups. Freight cars are something of a specialty with me, so if you have any specific questions I could possibly help with, just try me here.

I’m in the Yahoo group for ATCS Monitor. I get daily summaries of the posts on the group - something that’s probably possible for the group you’ve joined.

Given a particular interest, I’d have no problem signing up for a free group such as those on Yahoo. I’d have to be very interested to pay…

I am not a complete computer idiot (I got on this webpage, didn’t I?) But I haven’t figured how to do get on Yahoo. Does Yahoo tell you that you are registered?

If you have a Yahoo email account, you’re registered on Yahoo. If you don’t have one (or a gmail account from Google), they’re easy enough to get.

Just look for the email tab.
