If you had unlimited money to build a train of any kind how would you make it?
I’d use the money to make a layout that incorporated a double-track main line, branch and/or regional and a shortlne. All that looked an operated realistically.
Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal in it’s entirety and every train than terminated and originated there in the 1950’s.
I would find out what all you guys needed, and help get those layouts done, mine included.
very carefully
Can’t help but notice that you didn’t specify MODEL train…opening this up to all kinds of possibilities. I’d likely build a private line mimicking the Empire Builder running west from the Montana/Dakota line all the way to the ocean.
And I’d run EMD power. Hey, you said unlimited money, so being econimical is a moot point.
I think I’d buy a real shortline. Or a big basement for a model one.
Whatever it ended up being it would have the following, DCC, a large staging yard, fully signalized and built by someone other than me. Also in a large air conditioned room where all my friends could come and play.
Bob DeWoody
I’d fund the old E&N R to a full stand-up of its old rights of way, have a couple of highly efficient Consolidations, and a K-4 for Passenger runs up and down the Island. I’d ensure that the Kinsol Trestle and the Port Alberni runs were refurbished, and be a proud lifetime member of the Board who could ride any loco he pleased. [:D]
If I was a “Bill Gates” I would build a model of the Northeast Corridor in a stadium. It would be complete with working cantenary, full signaling, and Computer/DCC control. Acela’s would unprototypically run on time and there would be a dozen or so 100 car CSX trains.
You took the words outta my mouth. I live in the Southeast, but what little Northeast action I’ve seen is better than COAL!

I know that I limited myself on my earlier post, but I think that i would like to have a condensed version of the Sunset Route from East Yard in San Antonio to El Paso to include the Santa Fe (KCM&O) from Ft Stockton down to Presidio in the late 50’s/60’s era. Pecos River High Bridge, joint trackage from Alpine to Paisano Pass, Sunset Station, and on and on…
If I was Bill Gates I would build a complete scale modele of the US[:D]
HO scale
Even Better there would be a layout for every season evry year[:D]
And no abandonements
That would be a whole lotta layouts
Plus brass model of engines not produced in Plastic
I would build a layout in my basement modeling the whole country deserts, Fall scenery ,mountains, small town the flatlands, big citys you name it it would be a n scale
I would HIRE some one to build what I wanted and then enjoy running it! SInce I have the space a LIVE STEAM mountain railroad.
The question was what train would you build, not what layout would you build. I would have to say a 100 car double stack container train with 3 big diesels, love it.
sorry guys but i had tons of homework and had a golf lesson so…
Lots of space, so much that I could run a continuous loop, and by the time the trains got around again you would have forgotten them, so they would always seem to be new trains. All steam for the long hauls, with some electric for trolleys and interurban between towns.
The WSOR Reedsburg Sub, scaled down exactly to the scale mile(about 50 miles). I’d also hire somebody to professionally build and paint all the WSOR locomotives for me, so I don’t have hunks of red junk running around on my layout like I do know…

If I had an unlimted amount of money I’d try and build a layout of a huge section of the ATSF Super Chief’s line from Chi town to LA
