I was reading the review of the Lionel 31753 2551 GN EP5 set in the current issue of CTT and noticed something that caught my eye. In the New Lionel catalog is describes the engine as having two Pullmor motors but in article in the summary it says the loco is powered by two can motors. Which is correct? Being PWC I would have thought it would have Pullmors. Thanks
I saw that too. The original had 1 AC PullMor(sic) motor.

The postwar locomotive that Lionel called “EP-5”, although it had too few wheels, did have, as Rob says, a single motor. But it was a universal (AC or DC) motor, which Lionel wouldn’t have called “Pull-Mor” in those days, since that was the American Flyer term for what we now call a “traction tire”.

We can agree that whatever Lionel called the single motor in the original 2358 GN electric, it was not a can motor, right? So, which does this reproduction have, Pullmor or can?
My PWCS New Haven engine has a single open-frame Universal motor, TMCC, RailSounds, and MagneTraction.
I saw that in the review too, and am curious.

CAN MOTORS IN A PWC ENGINE???
BLASPHEMY!!!
I’ll try to get in touch with the author of the review - he didn’t include info box data when he sent in the review - so any error regarding can motors is my own.
I’m glad someone asked the question already. I read that review and was curious myself. I would think it would have a single pullmore like the origonal.
Funny - I used to feel the same way, then realized that my Lionel Amtrak GG-1 (6-18303) with two open frame AC motors, magnetraction, and mechanical e-unit spends an awful lot of time on the shelf compared to my Williams PRR GG-1 with two can motors, electronic reverse, and the TB-2 sound system. Even with lots of care the Lionel GG-1 just can’t match the performance of the Williams engine. The Williams engine also has a sweet hum and sounds almost like the real thing (except for the diesel horn). Of course, the Lionel GG-1 is impervious to overloads and will still be running 50 years from now.
Don’t get me wrong, I still love my PW engines with magnetraction, but not sure that I’d want to buy new engines with open frame AC motors.
Just my .02,
Mike
