I’m just starting to put up the bench work fo my HO scale and was wondering if there is a general hight rule from the ground to the floor. Does my hight have any realation to the I am 6’ 4" tall.
I’m 6’4" also and I have my layout at 65". Layout look great at eye level but I dropped it to 65" so i could reach the back of the layout easier
No real rules for layout height. Are there going to be steady visitors and what height will they be?
The visible parts of mine are 48 - 57" high.
Ground level on mine will be at about 40 inches. I’ve got to work under a 45-degree angled ceiling from the roofline. Under-table work like wiring will be awkward at best, but over-table reach will be easier. My preference would be a bit higher, but not if it costs me table width.
Mine is at 48" as a baseline, I’m 6’ and it’s a little low for me, but my father-in-law is working on this with me and it’s about right for him, he’s only 5’7". If it was for me alone I would have made it higher, but you gotta compromise somewhere.

I’m 6’-4" myself. How hight you have your layout is really a matter a preference and where your layout is situated
I originally built my current 4 x 8’ to be 48" tall. After trying it out, I decided it was too tall and immediately dropped it to 45", then to 42". I like the 42" height because I don’t have to lean over too much to reach the middle of the layout.
There are a couple of other reasons for making my layout shorter. One, is that the layout is at one end of my basement and my basement ceiling is only about 2" taller than myself. At 48", that would only give me about 30" of clearance from tabletop to ceiling. (I’d get the feeling that I was trying to run my trains on the bottom bunk of a bunk bed.)
The other reason is that I have some adopted nephews that come over on a occasion and I wanted the height to be more accomodative to them.
