Questions about double decker

First is it posible to have a double decker layout that is not connected to the wall?

If so what is the distance from the floor they should be. I do not want to have an helix I would just like to have a grade going up to the next level.

I am going to do N scale

What you are asking to do is called a Nolix. This is a situation where you want more than one level with no helix connecting them, but rather a continuous grade.

In terms of distance from the floor, it depends on how tall you are.

I am 6’2" but Im not the problem it will be the people who are going to look at the layout or kids.

Is it possible to have a double decker layout that is not connceted to the wall?

my n scale layout is an around the walls single track at 42 inches above the floor. i plan to build a second level about 12 inches above it with a two track six turn helix in a closet to reach it. if i didn’t want to use a helix i would probably have to run the ramps all the way around the layout to reach the second level. it would probably take up all of the length of the mainline run of 33 ft to get there. if my layout was free standing it would have to be huge to have a grade that would work with two locos and 20 cars.

I am building a triple decker… I used my floor joist for the support. I ran a treated on the concrete floor, then ran a 2x4 to the joist above. I fugurd the joist would give me enough strength that I need to run a train…

here are some early shots of the benchwok of my layout. It is a double decker with staging under the botom sceniced deck. I am using a helix to get between the two sceniced decks. What the pics show is benchwork that is freestanding and not attached to anything at all.
